Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is user-friendly, has minimal side effects, and has been proven to work for many issues. Stop suffering and start learning about what you can do to change your pain cycle.

Increasing Bloodflow With Shockwave Devices

Noninvasive shockwave therapy was first used in a clinical setting in 1982 for musculoskeletal applications. Since then portable devices have been manufactured for home use. Patients suffering from a variety of chronic tendinopathy issues have found great relief from plantar fasciitis to tennis elbow.

How ESWT Works

The easiest way to understand what an ESWT device does is that it sends an acoustic wave to the affected area to get a response from the pain receptors. A high-powered ESWT causes microtrauma in the tendon or fascia causing the tissues to repair themselves.

Typically ESWT is applied for a few minutes in each affected area and repeated up to 6 times. Significant improvements have been made in reducing chronic pain in most patients. Depending on the situation, these treatments can be effective for a year or longer.

During A Treatment

Depending on your target area of pain, you may wish to do the treatment yourself, or have someone help you. A home ESWT device is very user-friendly and can be turned on with the touch of a button.

Until you get used to using the ESWT device, it can be helpful to draw a mark with an ink pen where you are going to apply the treatment, this is especially good when using an assistant because that will help them to stay on track. Mark the most painful spot in your target area, and focus there.

Lay or sit in a comfortable position for the duration of the treatment. an ESWT session typically only lasts a few minutes. You may not feel anything, or you may feel a slight sensation as the wave is getting a response from your pain receptors.

After A Treatment

What should you be prepared for after doing an ESWT? Side effects are mild but can include bruising, tenderness, tingling, and some swelling. The application of cold compresses or ice can reduce any of these side effects.

Immediately following a treatment, you should rest and avoid any high-impact activities including heavy lifting and exercise. As always, drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet to encourage the healing process.
